The Mindful Classroom movement has been created as a way to make wellness more accessible to inner city families. In today's economy concierge wellness services are a luxury that only middle to upper class families with discretionary income are able to afford. Vital information such as stress management, healthy nutrition, brain health, exercise, and other related topics are not common knowledge for the average everyday consumer. This knowledge must be sought out through various channels, which ends up being time consuming and expensive.
Quality wellness education is lacking from the school systems in a significant way. Mental Illness, Obesity, Autism, and other diseases are on the rise amongst children. The common sense solution to this problem is to implement quality wellness programs in schools that educate children, parents, and faculty on how to decrease their risk for chronic disease.
The idea behind the "Mindful Classroom" is that life is one big learning experience, even beyond our time in school. Learning to maintain an attitude of open-mindedness to learning lessons through all hardship in life puts people in a position to overcome any obstacles that arise along the way. Mindfulness is the act of staying fully present in the moment, allowing us to sit with whatever feelings, thoughts, and emotions we experience. The active practice of mindfulness creates positive changes in the brain, which is vital for healthy development throughout the schooling process for children.
